We Nourish. We Restore. We Refresh Your Strands. Faithfully!
Slippery elm is one of those organic ingredients that is slowly becoming popular in the natural hair community. It is being used by multiple manufacturers due to its potency. It has incredible health benefits for our hair that you will love. But, many of us don’t know what slippery elm is as we may have heard about it overnight. Slippery elm is known as slippery elm bark powder. It is derived from the bark of a tree which is native to the eastern side of Central and North America. The scientific name is ‘Ulmus Rubra’ and has been used for centuries due to its healing power.
The slippery elm is rich in vitamins and minerals that your hair will absorb and love. It contains beta-carotene, selenium, calcium, amino acids, zinc, iron, potassium, magnesium, b vitamins, and vitamin c. They can penetrate the hair shaft to provide your hair with exactly what it needs.
Here are 5 benefits of slippery elm:
1 – STRENGTHENS THE HAIR
Amino acids are derived from protein which makes up 90% of our hair strands. The protein makes up a part of the protective barrier that covers each hair strand. Our hair goes through a lot through manipulation, chemicals, and even heat styling. Once damaged it is difficult to repair if we’re not applying protein to our hair strands. Since slippery elm is rich in protein, it can penetrate the hair shaft to repair the weak and old strands. As well as, prevent other harm from damaging your hair strands. So, your hair will be less inclined to breakage, knots, tangles, and frizz.
2 – CONDITIONS THE HAIR
The nutrients in slippery elm can penetrate the hair. It will restore and renew your damaged hair. Therefore, allowing your kinks to reach an optimally healthy state. Once the slippery elm is mixed with water or water-based ingredients, it becomes a gel-like substance. This makes application easier as it a little will go a long way for the hair to be conditioned from root to tip. It is the perfect addition to your wash day products for example a conditioner.
3 – DETANGLES THE HAIR
Most naturals dread the detangling process on wash day because it can be time-consuming and painstaking. Slippery elm is a natural detangler that will soften the hair to remove knots and tangles. Also, it will clump and separate the hair together where it naturally wants to. This will save you time and energy when detangling. Cleansers and conditioners formulated with slippery elm are what you should look for as they will keep your hair tangle free before you detangle. Therefore, making styling way much easier for your wash and go and/or twist out.
4 – NEUTRALIZES THE SCALP
Slippery elm is rich in vitamin B which our scalp needs. Vitamin b will heal your inflamed scalp so it can function as it optimally should. Your scalp will produce sebum production so which can encourage faster and healthier hair growth. Slippery elm is a great addition to your shampoo. After applying, you’re able to massage your scalp to promote blood circulation to the scalp.
5 – TREATS DULL HAR
Slippery elm is rich in fatty acids that will restore life to your curls. Is your hair frizzy, not as bright as it used to be, or non-voluminous? Through the consistent use of products rich in slippery elm, you are able to restore your hair to its former glory. Slipper elm contains polyphenols and other essential nutrients that will smooth and provide sheen to your hair. Through the use of conditioners and deep conditioner in your hair every week, your hair will look and feel better.
