We can be our own toughest critics. Many of us have carried the burdens of our shame from mistakes in the past for far too long. It's easier said than done, but you owe it to yourself to let go.
Here are 3 things you can try if you want to forgive yourself and say goodbye to shame for good.
Acknowledge The Mistake
Feeling guilt or remorse over poor behavior is not always a bad thing. Take it as a sign that your internal moral compass is working.
The best way to move on is to fully acknowledge that what you did was wrong and accept the consequences of your actions.
You can't undo the past, but you can learn from it and do better.
Understand That Forgiveness Is A Choice
When a difficult memory pops into your head, be mindful of the emotions that are attached to it. How do you feel when you think about that past failure?
You can remember your past actions, but they don't belong to your present self.
It may be difficult to avoid those emotions at first, but over time you'll be able to release the shame or sadness you feel towards yourself by changing your mindset.
Make the choice to forgive yourself every time an old memory surfaces. Eventually, you'll be able to think about your mistakes without beating yourself up about it.
Use Kind Language With Yourself
Whenever you think about something you've already said and done, instead of criticizing yourself for it, give yourself grace.
Remind yourself that it wasn't good, but it's over now, and it's ok. You don't have to punish yourself indefinitely.
You're allowed to move on and do better. Consider how much you've grown and improved. You are worthy of compassion and a second chance. So give that to yourself.
