A true pioneer, Madam C.J. Walker (born Sarah Breedlove) built an empire in the early 1900s, creating hair products specifically for Black women. Her impact extended far beyond beauty, laying the foundation for generational wealth and self-sufficiency.
Annie Malone: The Unsung Innovator
Before Madam C.J. Walker, there was Annie Malone, a chemist and entrepreneur who developed hair care solutions tailored to Black women’s needs. She founded Poro College, an institution that trained thousands of women in business and beauty, proving that hair care was more than an industry—it was a movement.
Garrett A. Morgan: The Inventor of the First Chemical Hair Relaxer
Garrett A. Morgan, known for inventing the gas mask and traffic signal, also made a major impact on Black hair care with the first chemical relaxer. While straightening hair was once seen as a way to assimilate, today, many Black women are embracing their natural textures and redefining beauty on their own terms.
